Advocacy to Curb the Child Marriages- Project
INTRODUCTION OF PROJECT:
SSO with support of Norwegian Human Rights Fund (NHRF) is working on child marriage issue since 2010. SSO started the first phase of the project in five villages of taluka Johi, District Dadu where the ratio of child marriages was very high.
In second phase of the project, SSO covered more 10 villages of the taluka. Thus, through this project SSO got the remarkable achievements.
Keeping in view the intensity of the issue SSO-NHRF has extended the project on Province level by targeting the five districts of Sindh i.e. Umerkot, Hyderabad, Jamshoro, Dadu & Larkana.
Through this project, we involve the journalists, nikah khawans (religious scholars) and targeted communities.
Activities:
- District level seminars
- Workshops with Nikah Khawans
- Capacity Building Trainings for Village Child Marriage Committees
- Awareness raising Theater Plays on the issue
- Journalists Workshops
- Walks against Child Marriages
- Advocacy Seminars with elected representatives
Achievements:
- Decreased the ratio of child marriages in the targeted areas
- Journalists reported the child marriages and some planned child marriages are preempted
- Registered 6 Nikah Khawans and 10 more Nikah Khawans’s registration is in process
- The communities are sensitized in the intervened areas on the issue
- The elected representatives participated in the seminars and assured their full cooperation and amendments in the bills
